♫♪  Malibu - Sister Mix #8 A.M.O.R.

This is DANCE MIX WATCH. I’m posting the best mixes coming in right now.

DMW #8 is thankfully (and coincidentally) also the eighth mix from Sister, an online platform supporting a range of female producers, some focused on the club and others, like Angola-based Malibu, on something different. Malibu’s A.M.O.R. mix starts out as romantically as the title suggests, always with a slightly sense of detachment that suggests love might burst at the seams. The mix shifts, about a third of the way into it with London based nkisi’s bizarre and beautiful “tears”. Rhythms and more vocals add into A.M.O.R., but the ethereal romantic quality of the first third is never left. In fact, it takes over again towards the end, this time a bit more saccharine (but never plastic), perhaps as a way to compensate for the leftover glitches and rhythms echoing from the intense middle part of the mix. A.M.O.R. has a track list, but reads as one always changing symphony with clear intention. Malibu shares an interest in chaos, similar to that of Elysia Crampton (whose work can be heard in the mix), or JG Biberkopf (who just played with Malibu on NTS), but there’s something tender and direct in Malibu’s mixing and production along with the chaos that creates an atmosphere that’s intricately layered.
