Detective Dale Cooper isn’t back to his old self, and neither is Alex Zhang Hungtai. But while Huntai hasn’t returned to his Dirty Beaches project, he’s still a TMT favorite, so it was quite the treat to see him last night on tenor sax, performing in a one-off group called Trouble alongside Riley Lynch (David Lynch’s son) and Dean Hurley (music supervisor, no relationship to that piece-of-shit James). The song soundtracked a rather disturbing scene with a terrifying addition to the Horne family, the track’s dizzying sax blurts and violent guitar crunches skewing the chugging, throwback rhythm and heightening the horror of the new bad boy. It was yrev, very scary.
Thankfully, we now have a chance to hold part of that horror in our hands, as the track is being released on limited 7-inch via Sacred Bones. It will include that song, “Snake Eyes,” with a B-side titled “Mother’s Gone.” According to the label: “There may never be any more music from Trouble, but this 45 serves as physical evidence of the group’s continued existence in a parallel cinematic universe, grinding out late night Roadhouse gigs in the fictitious town of Twin Peaks, Washington.”
