Whoops! RIAA and MPAA members might have accidentally signed up for Megaupload accounts (but only to download porn, they swear!)

Hey! Remember this from like six days ago? You know, when I (rather intrepidly, some might say) reported that the RIAA was suing every pirate’s favorite by-then-defunct and Mega Man-themed filesharing website Megaupload?

Well GUESS WHAT? Megaupload did a little casual poking around over the weekend, and it turns out that, um, a couple hundred or so Megaupload accounts? Yeah… they belonged to MPAA and RIAA members, including folks working for Disney, Warner Bros., Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Universal Music Group, Sony, Warner Music, and others.

In fact, according to TorrentFreak, 490 Megaupload accounts were “connected to MPAA and RIAA members, who sent 181 premium payments in total.” Yeeeah. All combined, this list of users uploaded “16,455 files, which are good for more than 2,097 gigabytes in storage.” Jeez, that’s a lot of shitty Lorde albums or whatever.

In addition, it seems that many of those places actually tried to work with Megaupload in the past. TorrentFreak says that Warner Bros., Disney, and Fox all reached out to Megaupload to discuss “advertising and distribution deals.” But you know what they say: “if you can’t join ‘em; harp on ‘em, get ‘em closed-down, then sue ‘em while trying not to look dumb for hanging out with ‘em the whole time.” Ahh, I just love it when things turn out to be axiomatic, don’t you? There’s just such a wonderfully poetic simplicity to life that way!
